The September’s of my childhood are warm and sweet
Like the summer’s end when it turns from August’s heat
The sunsets still gently beam kisses on my skin
Delightful and tempting like irresistible sin
The breeze wisps hair soft across my face
A grin curls around my cheeks like a welcome embrace
The crickets chirp through cracked windows at night fall
My lovers arms wrapped around me, the be-all end-all
It arrives with clear skies and bright wishing stars
And then it darkens with clouds and rewounds our scars
Now September is heavy, its burdens and memories
Like ghosts, invading and haunting the blissful reveries
September comes like a promise and leaves like a lie
Once offering safety, now a place you must survive
Its love sweet like honey and deliciously divine
Turns to stings of betrayal, destructive as the hive
It once brought life, now it drags the remnants
Demanding surrender complete with white pennants
Love and laughter beg to not be reduced to pain and cries
Now darkness comes devouring faith to your demise
Will I ever know for sure that it will all be alright
With stammered breath, I questioned God with tear filled eyes
When you make it through September, you’ll see
From ashes you’ll rise again courageously
Refined like ember, followed by humbled chills of October
Winter’s unwelcomed but quickly the year will be over
Eventually it will begin again, the faithful bloom of spring
Like hope, summer always returns, and again, you will smile and sing
I promise if to joy and peace you desperately holdfast
You’ll make it through September, and then you’ll make it through the rest
